I've been trying various methods from posts on various forums to get my home server (nothing fancy) connected to my iMac such that both accounts on the machine can access the data at the same time (not, obviously, exactly the same time, but when using Fast User Switching).
I tried various AFP mounting tricks to get the permissions on the mount point correct without success.
So I decided to try an NFS mount. NFS Manager from Bresink seemed like an easy way to set it up. And, indeed, I now have a mount point that both users can access.
Only two problems. A minor one is that the Finder seems to have trouble recognizing iPhoto libraries on the mounted volume as packages rather than folders, so double-clicking to open them doesn't usually work. No biggie.
However, Spotlight searches also don't work. That one is sort of a deal-breaker.
I assume that even a non-server OSX install acting as the server, an AFP mount pulls the spotlight index from the remote machine, while NFS mounts don't. Is there an easy option to access that ability, and/or an easier way to get at what I'm trying to do? I'm not unwilling to pay the $50 for OSX Server, but since all I want is a simple file server for two clients I'd rather save the money if I can.)
(I pretty much know what I'm doing, but obviously networking isn't my strongest area.)
