I've always used Spotlight exclusively as an application launcher, and so I have disabled everything except Applications (and System Preferences) to clean up and speed up results. However, in Mavericks, it's now showing the "Other" category which brings up all kinds of stuff, depending on what I search for. It's not included in the Spotlight Preferences, so I can't seem to disable it. Is there a workaround to fix this? While we're at it, I wouldn't mind ridding of Web Searches as well.

tl;dr: How do I remove Other?

Perhaps its a bug?

If you it annoys you, then did you try alfred, its free and may give you what you want.

I've used it in the past but it feels unnecessary since Spotlight already does all I need.
It's just that it does a little more than I need right now...

Agreed and spotlight works for me as well. Just a suggestion :)

After having done a clean install of the public release version of Mavericks on both my Macs I guess it's safe to assume that this is not a bug but intended behavior.

So does anyone have a solution to excluding this "Other" category (and maybe Web Searches) yet?

By any chance, do you have your system set to show hidden files?

Not currently, no. And the files being displayed aren't hidden files.
Just various random files like .log, .html, .ipa etc.
Files that didn't fit into any of the other categories I suppose.

Have you updated to the release 13A603 build?

I am not seeing this on the release version.

Both my machines are running on a clean install of 13A603 which I downloaded directly from the Mac App Store.
No beta leftovers here.

bump. i once found an answer to this but I'm having no luck since upgrading to Mavericks and have forgotten what the issue was.
