I am having some trouble with Spotlight. The spotlight icon appears in the manu bar but upon clicking it and entering text, it does absolutely nothing. The finder seach bar doesn't bring back any results either. I've gone to the privacy tab in spotlight system prefrences and when I drag any disk to it it doesn't appear. There is nothing there to drag out either. What can I do?

OK, then I really don't know. Until someone else chimes in you could try some basic troubleshooting steps like creating a new user account to see if it has the same problems.

Edit: You could also try repairing permissions.

Solution

I logged in with another account and Spotlight began indexing all my drives. Now it works in all user accounts. Anyone who has the same problem can tray that. Thanks for the suggestion!

Next time try dragging the com.apple.spotlight.plist file from its location in /users/*your username*/library/preferences to the desktop, then logging out and back in again. It sounds like this preferences file may have been corrupted.
