The obvious thing to check, which you probably already have, is to make sure that the folders where you're images and music files are stored aren't located in the privacy tab of Spotlight's preferences.
If the privacy tab is empty, and assuming the files are located in your main (internal) unpartitioned hard drive, then you can drag your hard drive icon (Macintosh HD) from the desktop to the privacy tab, standby for about 15 secs or so, then drag it back out. This will cause Spotlight's index to be rebuilt. When it's done you can try again and hopefully all will be well.
