My mac is getting pretty filled with photos thanks to photo stream. Id like to back up and clear iPhoto. Is the best way to do a Time Machine backup than just delete everything? If i do this every year I would end up with a lot of iPhoto different iPhoto backups right?

Can you explain more what you are trying to accomplish?

What would you do with the photos once you clear out iPhoto?

They would be backed up in Time Machine, but over time as the backup drive fills up they could be purged by Time Machine and they would be gone forever.

I have a hard drive if just like to store them on

You could just drag to iPhoto library from the Pictures folder onto the external drive. Then hold the option key when you restart iPhoto and you can create a new blank library. Would that accomplish what you are after?
