Please can anyone provide any help or guidance about getting. Sprint 4S unlocked? My wife had a two year contract that has just ended, and we have asked Sprint to unlock her phone for both international and domestic use. They provided an unlock code (that they call an MSL) and said the new provider would be able to use it. Unfortunately everyone we have contacted, including Apple and some third party unlockers, have all said that only Sprint can unlock it, and Sprint keep insisting that they can't. It feels like we're being given the run-around and could really do with some pointers!!

It can't be unlocked for domestic use.
Sprint can only unlock it for outside the U.S. gsm use.
Not possible to use it with any other U.S. carrier.
Don't waste your time any more. Just sell it as is and get a device that works on the carrier you want.

Sorry, still trying to get used to using the threads correctly!

That's really annoying, especially as the phone cost us a fair amount over the 2year contract. I was reading some of the other forums and they said something about Sprint providing a DSU for inactive Sprint phones, so that they could be unlocked, and someone reckoned that they were able to do that with their GF's old 4S. Is that a possible route, claiming I have purchased an inactive Sprint 4S and asking for a DSU?

Nope.
Youre wasting your time chasing a wild goose.
That specific device for sprint cannot be unlocked for US use period.
It's already over 3 years old, outdated and not really worth much so don't expect to get much for it.
Get something newer like a 5s or iPhone 6 unlocked or one that will work at the network you need it to work with. Sprint is junk anyway.

Thanks. I just don't like the idea that the bastards have done us over! So annoyed at Sprint, as they told us several lies up front about what they could do at the end of the contract...

Some points here. AJ is technically correct, but you may be able to get a work around. Right now it seems that asking for an INTERNATIONAL unlock for the iPhone 5 and 4s has been converting into a full unlock.

There are a handful of people I am aware of that have gone that route.

Call Sprint's international department and ask for an International unlock. Make something up if you are asked about where you are going and when.

If you get lucky the unlock will turn into a full unlock. If not, then you are no worse off then before. Keep in mind that this possibility, if it works, has the effect of permanently removing the 4s from Sprint's network. If you get a full unlock you can never use that 4s on Sprint's network again.

Some things to note:
• MSL codes are worthless. Apple does not use MSL codes.
• Both the iPhone 4s and the iPhone 5 use an entirely different SIM then the 5s/5c/6/6+. Because of that, those phones can get a DSU (Domestic SIM Unlock) whereas the 5 and the 4s cannot.

Good luck!
