I am so excited to finally get an iphone. My sprint contract ends July 6.
How do I cancel my contract? will they prorate the time between service months?

I need to have my phone number changed over to the new phone and service as well. I've always been with Sprint so I've never had to deal with this before.

bring your sprint account number with you and your number to port over and they will do the rest. This process will term your sprint account as well

Seems kind of silly to pay a cancellation fee 2.5 weeks out. Can AT&T port the number after your contract expires? Or maybe just port the number but keep paying the sprint contract until it runs out.

Thanks I haven't bought the phone yet and was unsure if I had to contact sprint to cancel as well as at&t?

TRUST Me I have no intention of paying an early termination fee which is why I've waited so long to get an iphone. That's why I'm trying to find out when I need to cancel with sprint and how to not pay 2 cell phone bills!

I'm currently (though only for a few more days :D) a Sprint customer. I was looking into switching last fall and found out from Sprint that as long as you are in the last month of your contract that you can cancel and not have to pay any termination fees. Thus, you should be able to switch to the 3GS as soon as it is out if your contract is up before July 18th.

No. When you go to AT&T to port your number over, your Sprint account will automatically be canceled. If you were to call Sprint to cancel before porting, you would lose your number and would be unable to bring it over to AT&T

So did you buy your iphone and just tell sprint customer service or store to cancel your service?? Did you switch over your phone number?
Also what about your address book in the phone can that be switched over as well ?

Thank you that's very good information!:)

Wait a month, why pay a fee when you're so close to the end of the contract. After that, bring your account number to ATT so they can port your phone number and after everything is up and running with ATT make sure you cancel or see that your sprint acct is cancelled.

Definitely do not cancel your sprint line and contract yet. You need to port the phone # while it is active. I would first talk to at&t and see what they would prefer you do. But a 3 hour call to sprint wouldn't hurt either. They should be able to prorate your account for the remaining month. Verizon did for my wife last fall with 4 months left on the contract and we only had to pay about $50 in which at&t took care of with a comp on our account.

I agree. I'd wait the 2.5 weeks. Then just do what everyone says; go to an Apple store or AT&T store and get your iPhone. AT&T will bring your number over and cancel sprint. With no more contract to worry about, you can start enjoying your iPhone and (I've had Sprint before, so I know) a MUCH better coverage area.

activate with a temp number if you need it right away. and then call att or go to a retail location to port your number in once your contract is done.

But Id just wait til its done and do it all at once

Didn't you buy that Sprint phone and sign the 2yr contract around the time the first iPhone came out?

No I've always had a sprint phone for many years it has been my only carrier since I owned a cell phone.

My former roommate worked for Sprint and I was a Sprint customer for many many years until I ported my number to AT&T last year during launch.

Here's ths thing about Sprint: They waive the ETF within 30 days of your contract ending. So, if you contracts with Sprint ends on July 7th, you can port your number and cancel your contract and pay no ETF, only the cost for services used.

I did this last year when I was 3 weeks from the end of my sprint contract when the 3G came out, and I picked it up on launch day and canceled my Sprint account, no problems.

I just re-read the forum and saw that someone else posted that info as well. The way to go about doing it is to NOT contact Sprint. I went to AT&T with Sprint account number in hand and let them do the rest. Once Sprint got the word from AT&T that I was porting, they canceled my contract. Done deal.

on july 6th go to the apple store, and port your cell number. you dont have to do anything more to cancel your sprint account.
