My parents iPad triggered the Find my IPad activation lock for no apparent reason last night. Because there is no reason my folks are worried the lock screen message lookign for username and password might be a phishing attempt.

Are there phishing attempts that can mimic activation lock ? Or can activation lock engage for no obvious reason/bug/hidden legit reason ? They are away so I've told them to do nothing til I can see it for myself

Have them perform a hard reset on the device and if it still displays after that then it is legit. But they should be fine regardless.

I've not heard of any recent phishing/activation lock connection, but being cautious is proper. It's probably an Apple glitch. Two recent MR threads :

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/sudden-activation-lock-screen-on-ipad.2013962/

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ipad-air-automatically-went-into-activation-lock.2009143/

Have them perform a hard reset on the device and if it still displays after that then it is legit. But they should be fine regardless.

Thank you both! Ah I don't fancy explaining it to them down the phone and they have another one that works, so I'll check it out myself when they are back.
