srenn capture problems

when I take a screen capture of a movie the shot saves to the desktop as a grey and white square image - no image. what am I doing wrong??

How exactly do you do a screenshot?
In what player does the film play, and may that film have some kind of copy protection?
Have you looked into VLC and its snapshot feature (OPTION+COMMAND+S)?
