I had a 2.5” ss drive by crucial 1TB mounted in a thunderbolt 4 drive bay by owc just up an unmount (I got a disk unmounted improperly error message) I was currently working in C1 not even using that drive. It seems to be gone it’s less than a year old. I’ve rebooted a couple of times I took the drive out and put it in an external case using usb 3.1 and I cannot get my MacBook Pro 18 os 10.14.6 to see this drive. Disk utilities doesn’t see it I’ve tried different cables. Is there anything I can do?

Do drives just up and die? Any help would be very appreciated as I had a full day of work on that drive and some backup files as well

Thanks

Ps addition info it was formatted apfs

This doesn't sound good.

I looked into this issue a while back when I thought my SSD went dead, although it ended up being that I needed to re-seat it in the adapter I was using.

Back then, I read some possible solutions from power cycling, hot swapping the power cable quickly many times, also baking it in the oven.

Baking it might seem strange, but I fixed a boken GPU from a mid-2011 iMac by baking it in the oven.

So, if you can't get it working, and you have nothing to lose, give it a shot.

Unlike a failing HDD, this seems to be typical behavior when a SSD dies.
