SSD backup

Is there any reason why I could not use an external SSD to back up my MBP with a HDD?

I use CCC.

No will work just fine. In fact i backed up my Mac mini to an SSD and have then booted the Mac mini with the SSD connected usb3 and have left it like that for two weeks now. My plan is to eventually put the SSD in the Mini to replace the HDD.

Can you believe that after have my new rMBP for almost 2 months I haven't even set it up yet?

Probably won't get it done for another few weeks.

My bad luck says I should back up my old cMBP this weekend so in case it dies that I don't lose my data while I am setting up my new rMBP, right?
