So, my 2011 MBP is dead. It has a 500gb SSD.

I have files on there I need to access as well as notes I have on notepad.

What's the best way to get these?

If I buy an SSD enclosure, pop in the SSD, connect it to my 2015 MBP... what happens? My 2015 MBP sees it as an external HD?

Would I be able to see the notepad files that way?

Do I somehow need to boot the SSD through my 2015 MBP?

Thanks

Yes, assuming the SSD is working, it will appear as an external volume on the other Mac.

Can you be more specific what you mean about "notepad" ? Do you mean Notes? Those entries will be backed by files somewhere, but it's possibly more work to get them back (I assume you didn't have Notes set to sync via iCloud?)

It should.
UNLESS the drive itself has failed.

I don't use notepad, but I'll guess that if you know where the notepad files are stored, it's possible to "get at them" from that location.

Hmmmm....
Try this location:
~/Library/Group Containers/group.com.apple.notes/

I would copy the "library" folder to the 2015.
Then, open the Notes app.
Then, choose "Import".
Then, "point at" the "Library" folder you copied, and see if Notes can import what's inside.

I've never really used Notes, that's just a guess on what might work.

"Do I somehow need to boot the SSD through my 2015 MBP?"

No need to boot.
But do this:
a. mount the drive on the desktop, so that you see its icon
b. click ONE TIME on the icon to select it
c. bring up the "get info" box (command-i)
d. click the lock at the bottom and enter the password you're using on the 2015 MBP
e. put a checkmark into "ignore ownership on this volume" (sharing and permissions).
f. close get into.

Now you can copy anything from the drive to the 2015 MBP, and the items you copy will "fall under the ownership" of the account you have on the 2015.

If you DON'T take this step, you could end up with permissions conflicts.
