It will work. It's backward-compatible with SATA2, but it will only operate at SATA2 speeds.

Not if you are going to use the SSD in the future with a newer MBP via USB 3 as an extra drive. If the budget allows, get a larger SSD such as 500GB ($309 at NewEgg).
