I also have a 1.67 17 inch hi-res PowerBook G4. Yes, any of those two will work, but compared to a SATA based SSD, I wonder if the PATA SSD is going to do any better than the conventional PATA hard drive?

Let me know how it goes, and if there is a significant boost in performance, I might consider the SSD route, though I would much rather find a way to convert the PATA connector in the PowerBook into a SATA one and use an SSD run off of the SATA bus.

I have these two choices:

1) Super Talent Technology DuraDrive ET2 128 GB SSD 2,5'' IDE (FHM28GW25H)

2) TRANSCEND 128GB 2.5" IDE Internal SSD Solid State Disk TS128GPSD320

Same price, transcend 10 bucks more expensive.

Any info and suggestion is highly appreciated.

Ben

PS. my other PB G4 is this: http://www.webalice.it/beniamino.cenci.goga/DIY/PBG4_sleep_magnet.html

An ssd will be quicker the Super Talent Technology DuraDrive ET2 has a 64 mb cache compared with the standard 8mb on a normal HDD.

To the op I would go with the Super Talent Technology DuraDrive ET2 they look to be a good company and transcend are well known for making cheap products. Although I've never dealt with either company.

yes, but then you need a 1.8", since there's no space for the ssd and the adapter

Thats what I thought... darn! 1.8 SSD's are weak, right? I am just getting into this SSD thing though.

edited august 2nd.

I have received the ssd and installed. Put Leopard and some applications, slightly faster, tomorrow I will post a video for boot comparison.

menu pull down, folder opening, everything is faster, not the same speed gain that I obtained in the MacBook with a sara ssd, but still worth the money spent.

More info tomorrow.

I'm really interested in this as well. Does this affect the battery performance at all?

I'm planning to open mine up soon to replace the clock battery and heatsink paste... :(
