Hi guys,

I have a 27" iMac and I want to add a solid state drive to it, but I'd like to buy a cheaper SSD than the ones that Apple sell.

Does anyone have any experience with cheaper SSDs? Do they work just fine? I've heard of some slight issues with battery life/drain on laptops, but since this is a plugged-in iMac, that doesn't matter right? :)

Samsung 830 is your best bet for OS X. Apple over charges for their SSDs, which are actually pretty slow. I am not sure what you mean by cheaper SSDs. I assume you're actually referring to "normal-priced SSDs without Apple tax"? Without going into the topic of enterprise SSDs, normal/prosumer SSDs and budget SSDs, there are different price points for different capacities. Apple's prices for SSD upgrades are astronomical for the iMac. I would recommend the Samsung 830 for your uses.
