Hello,

I want to upgrade my MBP 13" Mid 2012 Intel Core i5 2.5 GHZ 16 GB Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB, changing my mechanical HDD for a SSD and not removing the CD is it possible?

If yes or no what do I have to buy from Amazon?

Thanks
Came

Any internal 2.5 inch SATA III SSD drive 6GB/s should work, popular brands like Samsung 870 Evo, Western Digital, Sandisk etc.

It has to be in the 2.5 inch format.

Are the prices on Amazon Mexico in US Dollars? They are extremely high.
I would buy Lexar NS100

OP:

That drive in reply 3 is priced RIDICULOUSLY high (unless that's how prices are where you are).

I'd suggest something like this:
I like Crucial drives:

here's a bunch of the others:

To get into the MBP, you'll need a Phillips #00 driver, and a TORX T-6 driver.

When you're inside, take a good look at the ribbon cable that connects the drive to the motherboard.
In the 2012 models, they tend to get worn over time. When this happens, the computer will act flaky or won't boot at all. You can find the part number at ifixit.com and get one from them or elsewhere online.

Buy a USB3 2.5" SATA enclosure, and put the old HDD into it.
It can become a backup, or just use it for extra storage.

I paid US$30_2025 in October on a PNY 265 GB ssd via Amazon
for my MacBook Pro 2012 13" as a second drive which works fine.
one can buy a Something matchbook of that price.

I understand that southern America countries like Costa Rica pay way much more for tech.
my iMac g4 is being used in a medical office there since 2017.
they upgraded the drive purchased for the USA this March.

I haven't kept up with SSD prices but I feel $659 USD (I'm assuming that's the currency here) is far too much to pay for an internal 512GB SSD drive. Surely there must be something cheaper but just as good if not better out there.
The only question is If HIKSEMI SILK(S) SSD is compatible with my MBP 2012?

$659.00 Mexican pesos is approximately $36.49 USD is the cheaper I can find in Amazon Mexico :(
I am not going to open the computer, I will go to my nearest electronics shop to change the HDD for the SSD

About the ribbon cable that connects the drive to the motherboard can you show me an example in amazon?
we don't have ifixit in Mexico city

Thanks for the idea about using the old storage HDD as a backup or for extra storage, I did not think what to do with the old media drive

Thanks

I have some apps only for Windows 10 LTSC, that I need to run (MBP 2012)
The MBP 2014 has macOS macOS Sonoma (Open Legacy Patcher)
The MBP M2 Sequoia 15.7.2 (24G325)
So no need for Catalina any more

Thanks

$36.49 is a good price.

You can actually do the job yourself.
It's very easy in the old-style MacBook Pro's.

Any virtual Box free? I hate subscriptions
Cualquier ssd sata3 te va a ir bien
Gracias esa es mi preocupacion por que ya me llego el SSD de la foto que publique.

I don't have the screwdrivers and the patience

Buy a 2.5" SATA SSD like Samsung 870 EVO and a 12.5mm optical bay caddy. The caddy replaces your CD drive and holds your old HDD, while the SSD will go in the main drive bay.

We still use a 2012 13” MBP and the installation of the SSD drive is really easy if you have the right screwdrivers for it. Only thing to do first is to disconnect the battery cable as soon as you take the cover off, but other than that is an easy process. Not sure how much RAM you currently have installed, but once you have it open, maybe install more RAM in the machine as well.

Do you want to start with a completely fresh start or want to clone the contents of your old HD onto the new one? In that case you would need a Time Machine backup onto another (external) hard drive.

Once you have done it, you will feel like you got a new machine.

I recently upgraded a MBP mid 2012 15" and a WD SA510 SATA SSD/Crucial BX500 SATA SSD didn't work in the primary slot. An older Samsung 860 EVO worked just fine.

Virual box is free, I think
I never installed Windows on my Macbooks I'd buy a dell instead.

windows 10 was a nice clean os I liked that a lot!
Oracle VirtualBox is free and open-source software for personal, educational, and evaluation use, licensed under the GPL. While the base package is completely free, the powerful VirtualBox Extension Pack (for features like USB 2.0/3.0, RDP) is also free but requires accepting the Personal Use and Evaluation License (PUEL) for non-commercial purposes, with restrictions against modifying or redistributing it.
