ssd in older mac

installed series 520 intel 120gb ssd in older 17" mac book pro....2008....backing up to a 500 gb 400 fire wire hd is spiking cpu to 200+ with extremly low speed (35 mb of 49 gb in 10 mins) have run disk warrior on back up disk with little improvement......what may be the problem/solution ....thank you

You're just "copying files" or are you using backup software? You're backing up from the SSD to the external Firewire?
