SSD in OptiBay and turning off the HD?

My primary demand is not the battery but the noise of the HD.
So I'd like to shut it off, have my home on the SSD but minimally and everything that consumes a lot of space will be on the HD (like music) from the beginning or i'll shift it from time to time (like downloads).

does it work smoothly to unmount and send to sleep the non-primary SSD? (I guess since it should be the same as with any external HD)

does it make sense if quietness is a big criteria?
