I have a tough problem for you guys, perhaps you can help out
I have the first 13" MBP (2009). When I bought it I put in a Corsair P256 SSD. It has been great so far, except for one problem. When I try to use FW800 external drives, my computer often locks up when trying to move data around. It will start copying some files, then all of a sudden lock up (mouse pointer freezes and everything). I have to force reboot the computer (hold power button down) to bring it back up again.
At first I thought it was just an incompatibility with the FW800 hard drive, but recently I bought a new FW800 hard drive (different brand). I saw the same problems with this one too, perhaps even worse than before. If I try to copy a folder of files, the computer will lock instantly when I initiate the copy.
I took it to an apple authorized repair center, thinking it was a bad FW800 port on my laptop. He called back today and told me that he thinks it is the SSD that is causing the problem. He said he can only really duplicate the issue when he is copying data to/from the SSD but if he boots off of a different drive he says he can copy things reliably. I'm not 100% sure about his conclusion, as I have also had lockups when trying to copy data from my old external drive (connected via USB) to my new external drive (connected by FW800).
What do you think? Have you heard of problems with SSDs being incompatible in MBPs and in particular the P256? I know there was a lot of issue back a while ago with the MBPs being SATA (1.5GBps) and then they later released a firmware update for SATA (3.0GBps) and I heard that some people were having problems with the new firmware, I have never really had an issue but I guess this is a possibility too. Should I take my computer to the Apple store and have them look at it, and see what they think?
