Hi,
I have a ~2004/5 PPC Mac mini. It’s running whatever the latest OSX for PPC was (10.5.8?). It gets very sporadic use, like a few hours a quarter, then off until I do that again next quarter. I swapped the HDD with a SSD, because the computer is great for what I need it for (archiving and backing up files from the network onto another FireWire HDD). Effectively, the internal drive is just a boot drive to run the OS.
I did that Christmas 2016. Worked fine through 2017-early 2019. Then nothing. Plain light blue screen after the chime and apple splash screen.
I’ve booted from the dvd and run disk first aid, fixed issues, nothing. It just won’t boot. Clock is ok, battery in the board is ok, etc. Have reset the NVRAM and all the other things.
So the obvious is to swap back to the original HDD. But the boot time and speed of operation is so great on the SSD. I used a Kingston 60GB SSDNow ms2000 mSATA drove through an mSATA to IDE converter.
So, any recommendations on changing settings or modifying the OS for SSD use once I get my mini booted up on the old HDD?
A few years ago this was a worthy $80 investment. If working again, it’s suitable to justify not buying an Intel NUC or new mini.
Recommendations? Thanks!
