I'm looking to make a small but fast 2 SSD RAID 0 drive for media work (1TB x2). I already have a lightly used Samsung 860 EVO, just wondering if I need the same model or could I use something from Crucial like the MX500 as the second drive?
Thanks

Having the same brand, model, size, age, etc. is recommended for RAID0, but definitely not required. It should work fine with the two drives that you mentioned.

Just for testing purposes and to see if I could do it, I made SW RAID0 drives with many different combinations of storage.

I did combinations of one USB the other TB, also USB and FW. I made a one with a 120GB SSD and a 1TB HDD.

They all worked fine. Speed will be limited to a little less than twice the speed of the slowest drive (if doing a two drive RAID0), size would be limited to about twice the size of the smallest drive (if doing a two drive RAID0).

If the RAID0 you want to make will be used for a scratch drive, I think it would be perfectly fine. If you are going to be using it for storage, just make sure you have a back up of the data (general good practice, and not just because it is a RAID0).

Cool thanks - yeah, its just a scratch drive & just need a speed boost for a project

The two different drives will work fine. I don't know how you are setting up the raid but if you are using two different external enclosures, make sure to use two different USB ports on the MBP in order to get the fastest speed, don't use a hub. 1 SSD will pretty much saturate the throughput of USB 3. On my 2012 MacBook Pro two external SSD's attached to two USB3 ports gave me 659Mbps write and 600Mbps read.
