I did for the 64GB version and it made a difference. I would, can't really hurt it.
It's optional since the garbage collection on the Samsung SSD's are good enough, but I'd enable TRIM.

would there be any performace side effects?
or is it just a case of turning it on and only getting potentially good side effects.
There is a script here that will turn it on for you without the problems that come from Groths
I've attached the script I used to enable it for my Vertex 2..
