If I buy the base model 13 inch MacBook Pro, and upgrade to an SSD, will the performance be different than if I upgraded through Apple? Which SSD company(ies) would you recommend, and specifically, any good deals out there right now?

Apple's SSDs are SATA II whilst the MBP has a SATA III port. So yes a 3rd party SATA III SSD is going to be quicker than an Apple one.

Personally I use an OWC 6G 240GB SSD, but I'm using it in a 07 MacBook so I'm limited to SATA I speeds.

I thought 2007 MBP uses SATA2?

apple has 2 ssds you could get. i got the slower toshiba. but it is still fast. i paid 180 for the upgrade so i think it was worth it. ssds will drop slowly so i will upgrade to a faster and bigger one when the time is right.

do what you feel is right. i went with one that has slower speeds and more dependability in my mind and it works pulling it right out of the box and not one that might have problems.
