Technically, yes, if the SSD is anything like the TB-less 2016 model that was torn down a week or so ago.

Issue being, it's a new proprietary connector and a custom controller so the only likely swaps are going to be SSDs parted out from MBPs and sold on eBay. If I wanted to upgrade my Late 2013 to 1TB now, they're both hard to come by and extremely expensive. iFixit charges $949 when they're in stock, which they aren't, and looks like OWC is selling home-grown versions for $500-600.

So, while possible, cost prohibitive. I decided to put that money towards a new 2016 model that arrives Monday.

Have any of you seen the cost of SSD's that can do I/O at the same speed as the Apple SSD's? They're WAYYYYYY more expensive than the SSD upgrade that Apple offers.

Apple's prices are really not bad -- they're less than any comparable after-market SSD would be. So, just order it with the 1TB and be done with it...
