So intrigued to cop up extra dough for a great one....

I'd much prefer to do it myself as such with the RAM....

1) hard to install?

2) friend scared me away telling me they die after 12+ months, true?

Installing an SSD is not much more difficult than installing ram. Apple even allows you to install an aftermarket hd/ssd without voiding your warranty (that's how easy it is).

As far as reliability comes, it's depends on the sdd you buy and your experience with it. When it comes to computer hardware, some people have better experiences than others. I know people who have been running their ssd for almost 1 1/2 years without any problems. If you're looking for reliability, buy an Intel or non-sandforce ssd.

1. Just install it like a regular hard drive
2. Doubt it, but there are those few ones that are defective...so your chances of failure isn't too high...pick and choose which one you want. There are plenty of ssd that are reliable :)

And as far as the OS. I'd have to do a fresh install after upgrading right? Easy? Do macs come with the OS to install? Lol, sorry, will be my first mbp, CAN'T WAIT FOR THE 2012s!

I would hold off getting a mbp in your case. Ivy bridge will be an improvement over sandy bridge.
