I recall in previous versions of OS X when you were in a finder window, it would tell you at the bottom bar of the window how many files were in the current folder and if you selected one or more files it would tell you how many were selected.

Is there a way to get that back with Mavericks?

Open a Finder window and select "View" in the menu bar. You'll see the following drop down menu:

Select "Show status bar", which will place the following bar at the bottom of your Finder window:
