SSH public key question

I connect to various devices running an SSH server (ubuntu servers, cisco devices, etc), but I don't see an id_rsa.pub file in the ~/.ssh directory of my MacBook Pro (running Lion)

What key is my OSX SSH client giving to SSH servers when I connect to them? Will my currently working logins be fouled up if I manually generate an RSA public key?
