Slightly technical, but hopefully someone can help. Also, I'm not sure if this is more an OS X question or an iPhone one...
Occasionally, I create an SSH tunnel to another machine with a local SOCKS server (ssh -D ...), and I adjust the network proxy prefs to use this at 127.0.0.1:whateverPortIChose. This works great (if slow).
I would like to do the same with my iPhone (jailbroken, so I have some more options there). Currently, I am using internet sharing from the desktop machine to give me wifi access on the iPhone, but of course the iPhone uses the normal internet, not the tunnel. And there is nowhere to edit the iPhone's proxy settings (other than HTTP).
So, is it possible to "internet share" the tunnel somehow?
Or alternatively, I could set up a tunnel direct from the iPhone in MobileTerminal, but I would need somehow to tell it to use the local SOCKS server. Any ideas?
