I performed a installation fromm scratch to dismiss the nonsense about volumes as you can see from the diagram, I booted it to ensure no data was accessible.
I booted my Mac in recovery mode and it downloaded Mountain Lion.
To upgrade to the latest Mac O.S. Catalina I followed Apple procedure. https://support.apple.com/en-bh/HT211683
Following the procedure I installed the next allowable O.S. and in recovery mode it used my WIFI SSID and password.
After completing the installation to Catalina my SSID and password was inserted in the network portion of catalina.
I could understand recovery mode using the SSID to allow access to the internet even though I used the dedicated Ethernet port on my Mac. I cannot understand why it would insert from supposedly the NVRAM the SSID and password into the Catalina operating system.
