Stacks and dragging out items

Ok, I've been exchanging screenshots and documents with some of my colleagues over ichat. Typically the docs and pics are in a folder I created which can be accessed through one of my stacks. I used to be able to open the stack (list mode), find the item, click&hold the item, then drag to the ichat window. Now, I think as a result of a recent apple update, I can no longer perform this. Can anyone else perform this action? Am I missing something, like accidently changed a setting or something? I can't figure it out.
