Stacks = nerfed?

I seem to remember in some of the earlier versions of Leopard I'd heard it was possible to, in Stacks, navigate through folders so that when you click a folder in a stack it expands that folder IN the stack. Now, it just opens a new Finder window... is there and option for this, or am I imagining things?
