Hello everyone I own a Butterfly Keyboard Macbook Pro 2017 15 inch

I have had this issue since I got the macbook pro and I assume others have it as well. The issue being that no matter how clean I keep the keys, it seems that my screen "presses down into the keys when it's closed" and this creates a sort of "keyprint" all over the screen. This wouldn't be too too bad if not for one big issue, these "keyprints" DO NOT come off. I have cleaned my screen many many times trying to get them off and it just doesn't work.

My question is, is this another staingate issue? Can I get this fixed for free or is it costly, because there's no way for the end user to avoid this problem

Does anyone else have this issue with these macbooks?

Put a piece of computer paper between the screen and keys, to prevent what you have been experiencing.

The only thing on the screen is what was on your fingers being on the keyboard. It should come off.

This has been an issue for longer than Staingate has been a thing. My 2008 MacBook has it pretty bad, I cannot remove it on mine either.

I have used these for at least the last 8 years and have never had any problems with the screen getting marked from the keyboard:

well that is an awesome solution but it only works if I had it before owning the macbook pro.

it should come off but it doesn't and there's no way for me to get it off. How do you suggest I remove it, I have tried cloths/microfibre etc and all, it does not come off and my hands are usually clean since I wash them almost obsessively.

I realize I could have put a piece of paper etc.. but it's too late now as it's already stained. Please help me though, what do you suggest I do, as in how do I clean off the marks because I have tried making the screen moist many times with my breath and rubbing a microfibre cloth and other kinds of cloths to try to clean but nothing has worked and I don't understand why. ):

Thanks for the tip! Got my 16" in September. My last mbp's screen got pretty badly marked up so I've been cleaning the 16"''s screen and keyboard every time I travel with it. I think it's the pressure of having it in a backpack and things all around it? Maybe not. But ive been cleaning the screen and keyboard before putting it in a bag and so far so good. Will try this out also.

It doesn't if you don't put pressure on the lid. The tolerances are just that close.

I am using a plain A4 white paper from my printer inserting between screen and keyboard, i cannot find any radtech product in EU

@GumaRodak I used to live in Dublin and I bought the screen savers direct from Radtech and they posted them over to me. According to their website they ship "to any destination on earth"!

I know they ship, but the shipping is more expensive as the product itself :) and i will be charged more on this by my ****y country as well so the final price will be like 40€ for pieceof cloth :)

Questions:
Do you use a backpack to lug the computer around?
If so, how much pressure is being exerted on the MacBook while inside?

Also, THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO is to keep cleaning the display "many many times".
Retina displays are created with a particle-based sprayed on anti-glare coating that is VERY fragile and susceptible to damage. The more you "clean it", the greater the chance that you're going to damage it.

If the keyprints have not come off after cleaning, I would NOT attempt to keep cleaning to "remove" them. They probably aren't "coming off", period.

You might take the MBP to a brick and mortar Apple Store genius bar and see if they'll replace the display under the "StainGate" program.
BUT DON'T WAIT.
The extended display warranty is only for FOUR years from the date of initial purchase.
You may still be covered, but time is running out.
Again, don't wait.
You snooze, you're gonna lose.

Okay.. so it’s essentially my fault is what youre saying? So basically it’s unavoidable. It’s not like my hands are really oily or anything, like I said, I clean my hands a lot more than normal so this shouldn’t be an issue. I do not “press” the screen onto the keys with a backpack, I don’t put it in a backpack.

I can’t clean it off like you’re all suggesting that I should//it should come off, because it doesn’t come off. I already told you that in my OP — I tried to clean it, it does nothing, it doesn’t even come off a bit. I clean my screen when there’s little pieces of “spittle” that’s dried up on it and that comes off fine, I clean fingerprints from the screen and that comes off fine but these “marks” or “key prints” will not come off and I don’t see how this is acceptable. It’s been like this since I first got the MacBook Pro (like it slowly got more and more key prints) and now there’s so many that it’s like well.. come on, it’s Actually annoying to use it in a bright spot cause you can see them reflecting//on the screen.

I just want to have a regular screen again ):

Oh? By pressure do you mean closing the MacBook Pro like normal?

How does that create uncleanable marks? I don’t understand how there’s NO way to clean this off. No one has any idea?

That should not make these marks and since it does, it should be fixed for anyone with this issue.

Call Apple or take it to an Apple Store genius bar.

There will be 2 possible outcomes:
1. They'll cover it under "staingate" and replace the display free of charge,
or
2. They offer to replace it, but you'll pay.

I can't see any other possible outcome.
Good luck.

No, I meant "pressure on the lid", which is why I said it with those words.

If, for example, you carry the laptop in a backpack, and there are other items in the laptop against the lid, the lid will flex. It is not a rigid structure.

OP: I don't think there is any downside to finding out Apple's response to your problem. If they do something for free, great! Otherwise you can decide based on how much Apple wants to charge you.

Something else you could try is putting a privacy filter or scratch protector on your screen. Either type of overlay might block the visibility of the marks enough to stop distracting you.
