I finally figured out my strange behavior of my watch logging stair steps when I am riding my tractor when mowing. Today I was only doing areas that required a touch up n the lawn and to even out the weeds in some areas of my 5 acre lot. I have septic mound that needed to be mowed as it gets some moisture from under ground. So I go up the mound and down the mound. 9 set of stair steps were logged in doing this action and they matched the number of times I went up and over the septic mound.

That could do it. The devices also use a barometer to help calculate flights climbed (not stair steps). A change in atmospheric pressure is also known to cause incorrect readings.
