Starbucks today launched its "Mobile Order & Pay" feature in Portland, Oregon, which allows customers to place an order on their iPhones with the Starbucks app and schedule it for a pick up, reports WIRED. The feature requires that users accept a one-time Location Services prompt in order to identify the nearest location accepting Mobile Order & Pay, and uses a customer's connected Starbucks card to pay for purchases.

1. Click on the "Order" option at the top right of the screen
2. Select the food and beverage items to order: Just as in-stores, beverages are customizable, including the option to modify size, number of espresso shots, dairy selections and more.
3. Select the participating store for pick up: Approximate wait times will be viewable on the customer's phone prior to selecting store location. Directions will also be available if needed.
4. Confirm by clicking "order:" At the time of order, payment is made from the customer's registered Starbucks Card.
5. Proceed to the selected Starbucks® store to pick up food and beverages: Orders are immediately sent to the selected store where Starbucks partners (baristas) will begin preparing the items.
Starbucks plans to roll out the feature to more cities in the coming months and expects to complete a national rollout next year. The move could end up being a significant one for the company, as CEO Howard Schultz recently announced that 7 million of its 47 million weekly transactions are made with phones. Starbucks also notes that Mobile Order & Pay will be rolled out to its Android app next year.

Mobile Order & Pay is available now on the latest version of the Starbucks app for iPhone for customers in Portland, Oregon. [Direct Link]

so it asks to use your location once but then uses it anytime you open the app?

and in the background when your not using the app?

Starbucks Launches 'Mobile Order & Pay' for iPhone in Portland, National Roll...

1) what happened to ApplePay. Paying via mobile app is still listed on the ApplePay website as coming later this year. Only a few weeks left, where are we with that guys? Or did we get cold feet like CVS and their CurrenC cohorts?
2) you have to be a damned fool to link your credit cards or God forbid a bank account thru any of these apps. I like store gift cards though, and hope someday there is a melding of store gift cards with NFC within ApplePay.

It sounds like it only works with gift cards to me.

I wonder when the other coffee chains will do something like this... DD, Honey Dew...

I would rather forgo such service and get a great lunch in a restaurant next door to Starbucks for the same price and pay traditionally.

You have to pay using your Starbucks (gift) Card but the app has the option for you to link a credit/debit card so you can add money to your Starbucks Card from within the app. I've done it this way for years and have had no trouble.

National rollout in the US! Please remember you have a global audience now.

When you see national, can't you assume it means US only? When I read stuff on BBC and they say "across the country", I don't think they are talking about the US.

Add Touch ID to the the list. Having to enter 4-digit PIN every time I use the app seems backward in 2014 (PIN is optional, but I have linked a credit card to the app so it would be foolish not to enable it).

Update your mobile app now menu is back

After I read this article, I checked my iPhone to see if I had any updates waiting for the Starbucks mobile app and sure enough, they just released a new update and THE MENU feature is back!!!!

So glad they brought this feature back!!!
You can now see the entire menu on your iPhone app.

No, I'm pretty sure Starbucks is under the impression their entire audience is only on Portland, OR.

Palease! Don't you know that we are the best. With our hips and our records, loud music, and skinny jeans, and this and that, and I don't know where I'm going with this.

I actually found that surprising and not surprising. This town is so coffee focused, and they hate their starbucks, but then they love their starbucks... and I just don't know. I don't get it.

But I'm not one for apps like this. It takes all the flirt and fun out of getting a coffee, drink, sandwich, new boat, whatever.

Pet peeve about the enumerated instructions for mobile pay provided in the article... it always bugs me when people say "click" on anything in the UI of an iPhone app.

You can tap it, swipe it, pan it, scroll it, but it's physically impossible to "click" the touchscreen.

too bad the app is still a bit sluggish when going through the menus

That's by design. It assumes you have yet to be caffeinated, so Starbucks is taking it slowly for you.

The world moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look at the Starbucks app a little, you're gonna miss it.

Where do you get a great lunch for $4, I wonder?

Most of my lunches range from $2.50 to $4 including a drink. They may not have been a fancy lunch but it was plentiful and tasted well.

For average lunches - try costco, IKEA, etc - 2 hot dogs, chips, soda can be had for around $2.00 to $2.50.

Food trucks that come to factories can be had between 3-5 bucks. Fill up your plate with rice, noodles, some meat, and a drink. The one I used to eat at made a lot of their own food and had some items you normally don't get to enjoy regularly. Quality was quite well and he ended up opening a restaurant.

5bucks is a rip off and I usually just enjoy their holiday drinks and nothing else but they are few and far between.

hot dogs, chips, and soda are not "a great lunch", dude. It's not even decent food. You should know better!
