According to System Profiler, Starcraft II is a Universal Binary. Wasn't the whole point of UBs to enable users of PPC systems to still have newer software and games? Since Starcraft II is a UB, why won't it run on a G5? Seems kind of odd to me. Blizzard should have just gotten rid of all PPC and not made it universal if they had no intention of supporting PPC.

"Universal Binary" can also mean that an app can run natively on 32 and 64 bit systems, with no PPC code included.

I doubt the graphics card in those G5s would be viable for SC2 anyway. The 7800 GT might *just* be viable in low res; I wouldn't bother with anything lower.

Not meaning to rag on your system, just honesty, I don't think it matters you can't run the binary.

7800 GT is a lot faster than a 9400m which plays in low/med.

Thank you for clarifying that for me Jolly Jimmy. I did not know that Universal Binaries were 32/64-bit. I always thought they meant PPC/Intel support.

7800 GT is poor by "gamer" standards (which is what I am) - it is a mainstream card from a few years back. It is not in the current benchmarking tables for gaming systems.

My spare PC for games has an 8800 GTX and that is junk - it cannot make 30 FPS in Dragon Age II at 1680x1050 i.e. it's useless for modern games. That has more power than a 7800 GT.

Some bench scores for older gen mainstream (non-gamer) cards, just to put into context

Anyway my point was just that i don't think it matters that the binary doesn't run.
