start up external drive

hi,

i have a question about start up, boot drive.

i read some use this, (when using photoshop).
is this a better method for starting up a computer?

also, while i'm on the subject. i will mainly be using an imac i will soon purchase
for photoshop.

can anyone advise me as to the optimum settings for computer; (also, read of scratch drive, & or, applying a certain amount of memory to photoshop).

have not had a mac in 4 years. i had purchased one w/a problem back in 2001, and i would like to do things right this time.
