I am very frustrated. I thought I left my Macbook plugged in and when I got back to it, it was unplugged and not asleep--it had turned off! This is the second time this has happened. It wouldn't wake up so I turned on the power button and it started up to a clean desktop--it didn't do the safe sleep mode thing it's supposed to. I checked the system console log which said it had put it into safe sleep mode and had written a disk image of it to /var/vm.

This was the second time this had happened and I called Apple. I spoke to a Macbook specialist and then a higher up Apple product specialist neither of whom knew what safe sleep mode was. It was an infuriating conversation because the whole time they kept trying to sell me AppleCare while they were proving to me how useless it was in this situation!

I copied the contents of the VM folder to the desktop in the hopes someone somehow might know how I could boot to it? It's a 2 GB file called sleepimage and then there's a small file called swapfile0.
