Start Up Full

I have a Mac notebook and I am getting a message all the time now that my start up is full and I need to do something with it. I have been trying to figure out how to fix this so that I can continue to download but not sure what to do, where to look or even how to find the contents of the start up. Thought I found it, tried to copy and paste all into another folder and nothing happened. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
