Tried to turn on my iMac last night, as normal the apple logo appeared with the loading bar...... and that was it.

Loading bar took much much longer than normal, got to 100% then just sat.

Have tried getting into the recovery menu (cmd + R) but every time the loading bar comes up and does the same thing again.

Am planning on taking a wired keyboard home tonight to try that but feel like i'm clutching at straws?

iMac is a 2007 21" running what ever the latest version of OSX that it can (basically i do all updates when they come on the app store)

Any suggestions

My first impression is that the 2007 20" iMac (there was no 21") may be experiencing a problem with the internal HDD if there has not been any repairs/replacements in the past 11 years.

The max OS for your iMac is 10.11.6 El Capitan so your 2 posts in the High Sierra forum may not be the best place. You might get more help in the iMac or El Capitan forum. I would recommend the iMac forum.

If you can get into Recovery with the wired keyboard then run First Aid in Disk Utility to check the drive.

Do you have a backup to restore from if there is a failed drive? Can you boot from the install CD that came with your iMac?

Brill thanks I will try the iMac thread. I have a full time machine back up so I just need to get to the recovery menu and I should be fine. Based on what you've said I'll be getting a new HDD as soon as I can get it up and running.
