start up / password issue

Good morning,

this morning i switched on my imac 10.6.2 and for the first time it has asked for a password, thats fine, but the keyboard is not accepting anything, i just get that 'bonging' sound when i type.
please help as i am a little worried that i will have to restart the whole system and lose all of my work from the past three years.

all help appreciated.
