Dear All,

for last few weeks my 4 year old macbook 10 showing black screen at start up while I can hear fan sound and sleep light on. It would only boot after some 20 minutes after several attempts. I have done smc, pram, restarted with safe boot but no help. also hard ware test showing no problem with hardware. I have also done repair disk. after start up system behaves normally but when I shut down and again press power button to start the same problem as mentioned above - black screen, fan sound, light on but no boot sound.
is this software problem? will taking backup and reinstalling software help?? Please help.

Thanks & Regards,

Do you have any external HDD attached . . . a TimeMachine backup device for instance. Remove all USB/Firewire devices and try to boot again.

You could also try booting in Verbose mode (Command + V at startup) which might give you some indication of where the problem might be.

thanks Andy,
I have not attached HDD for backup. In fact I have never used timemachine for backup my data (which now I think is unsafe). Also I tried to boot system with all wires detached but no help.
I will do command +v next time when I will be able to start my mac as u suggested and get back to you. Also advise if formatting my mac can help in this.

Without getting to the root cause then I couldn't say if a reinstall would help or not. It could be a hardware issue, maybe the internal HDD is failing or it could just be a few corrupted files . . .

Verbose mode should give you more info.

Dear Andy,

I did Command+v as u suggested. I found one message "display:family specific matching fails" while all other things seem normal though I could not read everything as it booted very fast. is there a way i could take a screen shot of all messages displaying. should I worry about the message shown about display??

regards,
