startup disc icon

Please can someone kindly remind of exactly how I can get my startup disc icon visible on my desktop?
I did this for my MBA, but forget exactly how I did it!
I do find it useful to have it on screen, and now would like it showing on my screen, on my iMac also. Thanks!

I have tried this, but from Finder ->System Preferences -> General
I do not see hard drives.

I have 7 options available only:
Appearance
Highlight color
Sidebar icon size
Show scroll bars
Click in the scroll bar to:
Default web browser
Recent items
??

Not System Preferences. Finder Preferences. When the Finder is selected, click "Finder" in the menu bar and open its preferences
