Right, i've already posted on another forum about this but i've since narrowed down the problem so i'll c&p what i've said so far, then expand upon it afterwards.

aving major issues here, my dad's (windows) pc picked up a virus, so i said i'd scan it for him with the mac so i took out his hd and put it in a spare caddy i have. installed the Mac version of NOD32 and set it going with no problems. it got mid-way through the scan then decided to freeze up so i did a hard reboot. however, upon reboot i get a kernel panic (stop sign instead of the apple logo whilst booting). tried resetting PRAM: nada. Couldn't boot from the SL install dvd either, so i tried my Leopard install dvd and that worked fine. tried verifying the disk and it reported multiple errors, but i only ran a verify and not a repair as i don't know whether using a Leopard disk would cause problems with an SL install. currently i have a very expensive paperweight.

it's the last of the previous gen of Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.2.

since then i've managed to boot into Safe Mode (which i never even knew existed until today) and run a disk verification against the boot drive which told me the disk had errors and to boot into the SL install dvd to fix them (which, as i said above, i can't do). Also, i have no other Mac in the house with firewire 400 so i can't put it into target disk mode and repair the disk that way. My question is this: as i can boot into the Leopard install dvd, could i repair the disk from Leopard, or is this likely to cause more problems?

edit: as i can access the terminal, would running fsck -f have the same effect as running a disk repair from disk utility? that way it's os-agnostic.

further edit: possibly helpful - http://osxfaq.com/dailytips/07-2002/07-31.ws (i can boot into single-user mode just fine)

final edit: after a lot more googling i dropped into single-user mode and ran fsck -f, which solved the problem! all done and sorted so this thread can be locked/deleted/whatevered.
