After the update to 10.13.2, my old Mac Pro 4,1 (flashed to 5,1) has reverted to chiming on reboot despite using the well-known terminal commands; tried all in the list below as well as running the app Auto Mute.
Still blowing its horn! (Also tried resetting the nvRAM)
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=" "

Resolved using a setting in Onyx!

why do you need to mute it? it serves a purpose (at least, when troubleshooting). and how often do you reboot? as opposed to sleeping your mac... honestly, am just curious.

I don't reboot very often, using sleep, but when I do need to I am often working at different hours than most people, in this case late at night when my wife, who works and sleeps at "normal" hours, is asleep, so it would be best to have a reboot silent. The good ol' MacPro has been a very reliable machine, but the firmware has been somewhat funky from the start, and now after the update to 5,1, and the High Sierra update, it seems to refuse these "silence" commands. I was hoping someone with the same experience could steer me to a solution.

Does Onyx for High Sierra have that option? I would imagine that even if it does it’s probably doing the same thing as the Terminal commands. The Sierra version does state that “Some applications and system extensions can automatically turn on the startup sound again.” Worth a shot, though.

Thanks for mentioning that, I have Onyx installed and will try and see if it can do it.
Edit: Onyx to the rescue, there is a setting to disable the sound on startup in the Parameters pane, and it works!
Wish I knew what command it uses....
Thanks again Brian.
