State of apple tv 5.1 ac3 passthrough after 2.3.1 update...

Hi,
I have been trolling forums/googling about this topc for some time. I have found some people suggesting that after the 2.3.1 update, the atv passes through 5,1 ac3 even for files that do not have an accompanying aac track. Would someone care to confirm/debunk this? I would like to avoid re-encoding a bunch of files with single ac3 tracks.

It worked on 2.0 and higher. 2.2 i think broke it? I forget which version broke it but it's back to working fine.
