iOS State of handwriting recognition

Where is the state of handwriting recognition these days? Back in the Apple Newton days, some 18 years ago, it was fairly decent.

I can imagine with today's hardware and modern software development tools, the ability to use handwriting recognition as an alternative input method would be very effective.

It would be nice if Apple allowed developers the ability to create input plugins for the iPhone 5.
