Setting up my MacBook Pro on an DVI to HDMI cable to a Sony LCD TV.

I have a Bose surround plugged in to the audio out on the laptop. "headphones"

When ever I plug in the HDMI cable to the TV. I get loud static on the speakers. It's mostly there when there is nothing playing from the laptop. If I'm playing iTunes and pause it, the static slowly builds up in volume and it won't stop unless I play iTunes again.

I tested this on 3 laptops and it is the same problem. Any help appreciated.

static (like white noise) or a hum?

If it's a hum it could be a ground loop, get a ground lift at your local hardware store, or if you're feeling adventurous, you could pull the ground pin off an old power strip or something, and see if that helps it

It's static, like white noise. It grows louder and louder when there is no sound.

As soon as I play something, even if it's the pop on the volume control on the MBP, it stops then comes back on.

Is there a way to disable the video card from trying to send audio from the HDMI?

I'm reading this could be a cause for the interference.

Doubt it though since DVI sends no audio :p
