Stattoo alternatives / desktop mail readers

I'm really loving the idea of having a small, unobtrusive display of calendars, weather, and unread mail messages on my desktop. For some odd reason, it is less distracting than Dashboard.

I'm already using Rainlendar for the calendar, and I like the Stattoo app for showing weather and mail. Before I shell out the $12.95 for Stattoo though, I wonder if there are better/more customizable alternatives out there? Stattoo is pretty limited.

I'm specifically looking for something that will display my unread mail messages directly on my desktop. Any ideas?

Can GeekTool display unread mail messages? (From Gmail or some IMAP server) And, as an aside, does it only display text, or is it possible to pretty it up a little?

Did you try Geektool?

I tried Geektool but coudn't manage it to get a 100% transparent background. I guess it is not fully compatible with 10.5.7.

I have not had much luck getting GeekTool to run at all. Oh well.

I guess there aren't too many apps like this out there because of Dashboard.
