Currently i'm still on firmware 1.0.2 on my iPhone after reading about some of the issues that firmware 1.1.1 has brought to some iPhones would it be safe to stay on an earlier version?

Just stay on 1.02 and be happy!

1.1.1 is a pain!

Did you do a search? Go to 1.1.1. There is no reason to stay on 1.0.2. Did you jailbreak your iPhone? Who's your provider, AT&T?

No i didn't jailbreak my iPhone i wouldnt want to void the warranty on a $400 phone, my carrier is AT&T

It's only if you SIM unlock your iPhone that 1.1.1 bricks it, right? If you just had AppTap or whatever, 1.1.1 will vanish it but your phone will still work?

I *was* a hold over for 1.02, I waited until iFuntastic and iToner were out and 'solid' enough to make the jump to 1.11.
I would have stayed @ 1.02 BUT the gmail imap thing was to great a thing to resist.
I was jailbroke and apptap installer enabled. I plugged the phone into iTunes and clicked the "Update" button 10 minutes later i had a functional 1.11 phone. Sans the jailbrake and apptap. Those toke another 15 mins to get installed.
So now I'm 1.11 + Jailbroke + appTap
Not seeing the reported battery issue YET
other then knowing i'm running 1.11 the phone appears and works just like before.

Err what does Gmail IMAP have to do with 1.1.1?

I was staying on 1.0.2, I had a few apps I didn't want to lose, but I was very, very tempted to try out that one step jailbreak process.. so I took the plunge and updated to 1.1.1, did the one step jailbreak, redownloaded my two apps and I have no complaints.. phone is working wonderful.. no speed issues or unexpected crashes or the like... (knock on wood)

As an added bonus, I do notice my handset volume on calls is louder.. so that was an added advantage..

When gmail enabled imap on their service *my* experience with the 1.02 software and gmail imap was a resounding failure. Others had posted similar stories and they too were 1.02 holdovers.
The ability to manage my gmail accts from the iPhone is just to strong a thing to stay away from.

Might be an issue with your individual phone. I'm on 1.0.2 and enabled the gmail imap feature the day it was announced. I have had no problems what so ever. I also have installer installed, and have multiple apps installed.

My experiance with the gmail IMAP is exactly opposite of a resoundsing failure. Perhaps Apple should take some lessons from Google as to giving users what they like, and not what they feel users should have.

how have u guys updated an unlcked iphone running 1.0.2 to 1.1.1? i wanna do it for the itunes wifi store but im a wuss haha

I have 1.0.2 and I love it. Its so easy to install apptapp on 1.0.2 where with 1.1.1 It is a lot of work and very unstable with apps. Just stick with 1.0.2

I updated my unlocked 1.0.2 to 1.1.1 yesterday. Depending how you unlocked, there are different ways to upgrade. If you used iUnlock or Anysim, then you first need to virginize your iPhone back to stock 1.0.2.

Follow this visual guide:

It took about an hour including the 15 minutes for iTunes to download the 1.1.1 update.

There is also a good forum on that site to post if you have problems.

With that one step process, it's not very difficult to jailbreak 1.1.1

And the apps I have installed have not acted up in any way, shape or form..
