Staying connected to internet while Mac is sleeping

How do I stay connected to my network when my Mac Book is sleeping? As soon as I open up my comp, or move the mouse, then is automatically connects. I just want to stay connected the whole time.

You can't. Sleep is sleep, nothing gets done.

is there any setting or preference that will allow me to shut my Mac book but be able to have i chat running at all times? And still be connected to the internet?
